Tour Diary - Western Isles Wildlife July 2026

From the dramatic Highlands to the spectacular beaches of the Outer Hebrides, our Western Isles Wildlife Summer Tour (18–26 July 2026) delivered an unforgettable week of world-class wildlife encounters, breathtaking landscapes and fascinating island heritage.

Travelling through no less than 11 islands including Lewis and Harris, North and South Uist, Barra, Vatersay and Skye, the group explored an extraordinary variety of habitats, from flower-rich machair and ancient peatlands to rugged mountains, pristine white-sand beaches and wildlife-rich seas. Every day brought memorable sightings including magnificent White-tailed and Golden Eagles, Hen Harriers, Short-eared and Long-eared Owls, Red-necked Phalaropes and an abundance of seabirds and waders. The surrounding waters proved equally rewarding, with Otters, Harbour Porpoises, Common Dolphins, Minke Whales, Harbour and Grey Seals providing spectacular coastal wildlife experiences.

The islands' stunning botanical displays were another highlight, with colourful machair meadows alive with orchids, heathers, carnivorous plants and a rich diversity of wildflowers. Visits to iconic landmarks including the Barvas Shieling, Arnol Blackhouse and Dun Carloway Broch added a fascinating cultural dimension to the journey.

The tour also celebrated conservation, with participants contributing valuable records to citizen science projects and finishing with an inspiring visit to the Trees for Life rewilding centre at Dundreggan. Combining exceptional wildlife, remarkable scenery, warm hospitality and expert guidance, this was a truly memorable adventure through one of Britain's finest wildlife destinations.
