Overview
Deeside is the undiscovered side to the Cairngorms National Park. This royal valley is home to swathes of Caledonian forest that hug the fringes of munros and shelter the delightful villages of Braemar and Ballater. It is also a haven for wildlife and the perfect place to get a real feel for just how diverse and spectacular wildlife is in Scotland.
Whether you want a general introduction to the wildlife of the area or to search for specific species we can create a day (or days) to remember. In any one day you can walk past ancient Granny pines, watch Mountain Hares soak in the sun, awe at Golden and White-tailed Eagles, marvel at Crossbills adeptly harvesting cones, observe nationally rare butterflies, moths and dragonflies and finish off by getting face to face with Pine Martens and Badgers.
Whether a dedicated bird or mammal watcher or a family keen to track wildlife, Deeside will have a lot for you. Below are a number of suggested itineraries and a synopsis of what can be seen across the seasons, or suggestions if you are interested in a particular group of species. Pick and choose to create your perfect day out!
Itinerary Suggestions & Recommendations
We can create itineraries to suit your main interests whether wanting to learning the tracks and signs of local mammals as a family, or focused on getting shots of Mountain Hares and Pine Marten. These can be from half-days to multiple days and even explore further out in the region. In order to help you narrow the possibilities and give you some inspiration we have created a breakdown below by season, by different species and by speciality days.
By Season
Every season has its charms, its own character and a superb array of wildlife on offer. You can visit Deeside at any time of year and not be disappointed.
Spring
Spring is an exciting time of year in Deeside. It’s all change. Days are growing longer and warmer and this triggers an abundance of life and breeding activity. In March and April, even into May, Black Grouse strut around their lekking arenas, whilst Red Squirrel, Pine Marten and Badger are all increasing their feeding and denning activity. Snow can linger right through spring and Mountain Hare and Ptarmigan may still be found in their winter whites along the edge of snow patches whilst Ring Ouzel will fill the mountain air with their melodic song. The first Birch buds start to break through in April and this is when the stunning Kentish Glory moth can be found closely followed by Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterflies in May. April is also the month when many migrant birds start flooding back into the area including Osprey, Cuckoo, Tree Pipit and the ubiquitous Willow Warbler. Golden Plover, Snipe and Common Sandpipers return to breed along the rivers and in bogs where the charming Whinchat can also be found.
Summer
From the end of May through to the end of August Deeside is blessed with long, often warm days and a plethora of wildlife. All the summer breeding birds have returned and the high tops are home to Dotterels and Snow Buntings. Ospreys that have arrived back in spring will be foraging along the Dee. Arctic-Alpine flowers are now in bloom and with them a number of rare upland moths also fly such as Netted Mountain Moth and Small Dark Yellow-Underwing. Lower down the slopes Dark-bordered Beauty Moths can be found as well as Northern Brown Argus butterflies. Summer is when rare plants such as Twinflower and Creeping Ladies Tresses can be found in the Caledonian Forest whilst open meadows can be awash with colour from the flowers. Come mid-summer a number of rare dragonflies and damselflies are on the wing including White-faced Darter and Northern Damselfly. At this time of year Pine Martens and Red Squirrels have young out and about.
Autumn
The shortening of the days triggers a major change in Deeside. Aspens turn brilliant-yellow and flocks of Pink-footed Geese migrate south. Some pause on the lochans, and closer to the coast huge flocks gather to stage on their journey south. The Red Deer rut commences in late-September with animals bellowing across the mountainsides. Ptarmigan and Mountain Hare start to acquire their white winter coats and there should be hundreds of fungi carpeting the forest floors.
Winter
Despite the short days of winter, it can still be an excellent time to see wildlife. Mountain Hares and Ptarmigan looking pristine against the snow, flocks of winter thrushes arrive to feed in the valley bases and Black Grouse take to the trees to forage for buds. The scenery is spectacular, and herds of Red Deer add to the landscape. Red Grouse, Golden and White-tailed Eagles brave out the weather and remain on territory and can actually start to display as early as December. It is also a fantastic time of year for tracking wildlife with tracks and signs left for us to follow.
Towards the end of winter in February we can find Goshawks displaying and Black Grouse back on their leks ready to attract a mate.
All Year
There are of course some species that remain year-round in Deeside though they may be easier to see in certain seasons. No matter what time of year you chose to visit this fabulous area we can hope to show you Golden & White-tailed Eagles, herds of Red Deer, Roe Deer, Black Grouse and Goshawk, Mountain Hare and Ptarmigan. Species such as Scottish, Common and Parrot Crossbill can also be found year-round and of course the landscapes look equally stunning no matter which month you visit.
By Species Group
Mammals
Deeside and adjacent areas are home to some of the UKs best mammal watching. Pine Martens and Badgers are widespread and can be seen at close quarters from designated viewing hides, Red Squirrels are widespread through the woodlands and Caledonian Forest which are also home to Red, Roe and Fallow Deer. In autumn the Red Deer stags signal their intent by bellowing across the landscape in an intimidating show of strength. With luck you can encounter Otters fishing in the River Dee and just occasionally Scottish Wildcat is sighted in the most remote areas. At dusk several species of bat come out to forage and with help from our bat detectors you can enjoy listening to their activities around us. Mountain Hares are a feature of the higher ground and can be found in good numbers at some sites. A little further afield we can go in search of Beavers whilst along the coast Bottlenose Dolphins, Porpoises, Grey and Common Seals can be found.
Birds
Deeside is home to one of the best selection of upland and forest species anywhere in the UK. The endemic Scottish Crossbill can be found along with Parrot and Common Crossbills, Crested Tits are located relatively close by and the Caledonian forest is home to Black Grouse. On the high tops Ptarmigan occur year-round whilst Dotterel, Ring Ouzel and Snow Buntings can be found during the summer months, the latter descending to the ski resorts on winter.
In summer Redstart, Tree Pipit and Cuckoo come back to the birch woods to breed and Golden Plover, Dunlin and Snipe return to the moors alongside the ubiquitous Red Grouse. White-tailed Eagle is now a breeding species in Deeside along with Golden Eagle, Goshawk, Hen Harrier and Peregrine. Osprey return to the valley from late-March and remain until September and with luck you may also encounter Merlin.
A visit to the coast can complement a day in the Cairngorms perfectly with huge seabird colonies, thousands of seaduck and waders, farmland birds such as Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer and Tree Sparrow, wetland birds that include Crane, Marsh Harrier and Bearded Tit and many other migrants.
Capercaillie Need Our Help
Capercaillie are rapidly declining in Scotland and one of the biggest pressures they face today is simply disturbance. This is easy to avoid so Wild Discovery does not go searching for this bird on any of their tours.
If you are thinking of going looking for Capercaillie please don’t. If you visit woodland please stick to the paths and if you have a dog please make sure they stay on the lead. Let’s do our bit to give these magnificent and iconic birds a chance.
Invertebrates
Deeside is especially rich in invertebrates. From April onwards the area boasts a number of rare and fascinating species including the striking Kentish Glory, a large, attractive, day-flying moth, Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Northern Brown Argus, Netted Mountain and Black Mountain Moth and Dark Bordered Beauty to name but a few. Around the wetlands you can’t help but notice the dragonflies and damselflies which include species such as White-faced Darter and Northern Damselfly, both nationally scarce. On the forest floor you will find huge Wood Ant mounds and some that belong to the rare Narrow-headed Ant.
Plants
From finding fascinating carnivorous plants such as Sundews and Butterworts to exploring one of the largest swathes of Caledonian forest in Scotland, Deeside has offerings for the generalist or more experienced botanist. The woodland habitats support such exciting species as Twinflower, Creeping Ladies Tresses and Intermediate Wintergreen. Groves of Aspen can still be found and in autumn they turn a blazing yellow. The mountains are also great for dry heath species and higher up we can find some of the richest areas in the country for Arctic-alpine plants, some of which are accessible on-foot.

“We had an absolutely wonderful tour of Deeside with Wild Discovery!
Rachel and Dan shared their extensive knowledge in such a smooth and graceful way.
They are both intelligent scientists who are obviously interested in helping others learn about the world around them.
The facts they shared about the plants/animals/insects/geology as we walked around was truly fascinating.
This was an experience myself, my husband, and our teenage daughter will never forget and we hope to do another Wild Discovery tour soon!” C.Carney & Family, USA

“Wow - what an incredible couple of days. Rachael & Dan are brilliant guides - they are hugely knowledgeable, and we loved hearing them tell tales of the natural history and changing landscapes as we walked through the beautiful Cairngorms. But we were not expecting such abundant and diverse wildlife sightings; Eagles, Short-eared Owls, Red Squirrells, Red & Black Grouse, Dolphins... the list goes on. We felt like we were on an episode of Wild Isles! They made us both feel at ease with our lack of experience, helping us sight things and explaining things carefully. The next opportunity we have to head to Cairngorms, we'll be back for another tour with the awesome duo!” T. Holmes, UK

“We engaged Dan and Rachael for a family holiday in Scotland in July. From the start they were very friendly and listened carefully to our requirements. Our party consisted of my 86 year old mother, my partner and I (in our 60s), 22 year son and his partner. We were looking for local knowledge and guiding to enable all of us to 'get out there' as a group to enjoy different local habitats and wildlife, both in the Cairngorms and West Argyll coast, despite our varied abilities. Dan and Rachael came up with a programme which more than met our expectations. They also included activities such as moth trapping which was wonderful - their knowledge of moths was exceptional.
As a team they demonstrated a very impressive all round knowledge of the natural history of the areas we explored and although my partner is a professional conservation biologist, there was still much that was new to us. They are excellent 'spotters'! I was unfortunately taken ill on one walk but they responded calmly and professionally, enabling me to be looked after whilst continuing to guide the rest of our group on the planned walk.
We received some wonderful photographs from them as a reminder of a really enjoyable experience. I would not hesitate to recommend Dan and Rachael for guided wildlife experience - professional, competent, flexible, very knowledgeable and also a really lovely couple.” T. Knight, Wales.

“I joined Dan and Rachael for an evening tour to see Beavers and had expected to go to a hide and wait for the wildlife to come to us. Arriving at the riverbank, we explored for signs of activity along the gentle walk before settling down quietly right at the waters edge to await their arrival. While keeping an eye out for movement, Dan and Rachael shared their extensive knowledge on both Beavers and Scottish flora and fauna. Once the Beavers arrived we were able to move locations to keep up with them as we weren’t restricted to a hide, which provided a longer experience and more photo opportunities. This made it a more real and intimate experience with a small group right at the waters edge and as such was a real trip highlight.
Both Dan and Rachael have a great passion and enthusiasm for the natural world which is infectious and on the drive home were still stopping to show Mountain Hares and Red Deer. Their worldwide in-depth knowledge in nature was also a real treat, discussing a variety of subjects and I would recommended them to anyone looking for a more genuine wildlife experience. I hope to be back to explore more of Scotland with them in future.” L. George, UK.

“Navigating the wildlife or the Highlands can be a hit and miss affair, not just because of the weather but also because you really need to know the very special spots to concentrate on. For this reason, and because we particularly wanted to see the special crossbills of the area, we decided to hire a professional guide for our first day in the Cairngorms (last week of May 2021). At the suggestion of a top-notch birding friend of ours, we contacted Dan Brown of Wild Discovery and agreed an itinerary and a very reasonable rate. In the event, Rachael came as well which was a real bonus.
Thanks to their skills at hearing small, distant “chips” and knowing what birds were making them, we were able in our third location to get terrific views of a feeding family of Parrot Crossbills and in the next spot to find a similarly feeding family of Scottish Crossbills. Dan was super-fast at getting the ‘scope onto them for better views and helping us get through-the-scope photos of them with our mobile phones. These birds are only found in the UK in the Scottish Highlands, are few and far between and are tricky to identify.
The weather wasn't too good, so we weren't able to climb to higher elevations – as we had hoped - but we also got great views of a Golden Eagle being mobbed by a Buzzard, Ring Ouzel, Black and Red Grouse, and lots more besides. We also had an interesting walk through part of the Balmoral Estate, with beautiful deer peering at us, and past stunning waterfalls.
They also pointed out good places to go to on subsequent days in the Cairngorms for Dotterel, Ptarmigan and other specials.
Dan and Rachael also knew so much about the insects and flora of the area as well as other wildlife. And besides being great naturalists, they were really friendly and interesting people to travel with.
We were totally satisfied at the end of the day.” J. Clark, UK

“Our Pine Martin viewing evening was very special. Rachael & Dan are knowledgeable & we loved hearing about these beautiful creatures. Seeing them feed & interact so close to us is amazing. We were able to get many pictures capturing our time with the male, then female & kit so we can look back. Rachael & Dan kept us informed about the evening beforehand & were easy to communicate with. We look forward to booking another wildlife experience with them both.” P & T Stephens, Scotland
